An essay for WTOP.com where I describe the greatest sports game I’ve ever seen — Max Scherzer’s no-hitter against Pittsburgh on Father’s Day Weekend 2015. (WTOP.com)
Jason Hawkins left New Orleans as Katrina hit, and watched from Texas as the levees broke. He eventually found his way to the DC area and reflected on the storm, and how it has changed his life for the 10th anniversary of hurricane Katrina in 2015. (WTOP.com)
4 Reasons You Should Hire a Journalist for your PR Needs:
(Personal Branding Graduate School Assignment)
I’ve spent the majority of my professional career working in Journalism. I love news, and I love writing, but I’m also on a mission for a better work-life balance.
So… I’m back in graduate school, and exploring the wild world of PR.
The biggest road block I run up against is, “Well… you don’t really have any PR experience.”
I beg to differ… and here’s why!
- The core of Public Relations is writing. I’ve written dozens of scripts, articles, and social media posts — EVERY DAY for the last decade! I know how to write, I am an AP Style pro, and I can do it all very quickly without sacrificing quality.
- I know how journalists operate! While I was never a reporter, I was often the one screening emails, taking phone calls, and talking to public information officers to help gather information for a reporter to use in a story. I know about the deadlines reporters face, and how to craft something to peek their interest. (I also have a lot of their personal e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers…)
- I’m used to tight deadlines, and I work well under pressure. Need something turned around quickly? No problem! I’m used used to tight deadlines, and not having enough hours in the day! Added bonus — I also work well under this type of pressure. Sometimes I even thrive under it.
- Video is HOT right now! Your company wants to jump on the Facebook Live bandwagon? Awesome! Guess what? Things like framing, lighting, audio quality, producing the segment for a Facebook Live post — those are all things that someone with a journalism background can be quite helpful with!
So, the next time you think that Journalism and Public Relations are as different as Mars and Venus, think again, check out my resume, and maybe consider me for the next opening you have at your company.
